Portuguese motorhome rental sector at risk due to high vehicle tax

Storm Kristin caused damage in the Leiria district of Portugal. A caravan was overturned in Alcobaça, resulting in one person being seriously injured. Over 60% of the municipality remains without power, with one minor injury and seven people displaced also reported.

A motorhome with foreign license plates caught fire in the parking lot of a Bricomarché store in Sines, Portugal. The fire started in the engine compartment and completely consumed the vehicle. Firefighters were alerted at 1:13 PM and deployed five personnel with two specialized vehicles to extinguish the blaze.

Hyundai presented the Staria Camper Concept, an electric camper van study, at the CMT 2026 show in Stuttgart. The company aims to launch a production version in Europe within the next two years. The concept features an 800-volt architecture for fast charging, a roof-mounted solar panel, and a classic interior layout.

A retired Brazilian couple has been living in Europe since 2019, traveling in a 1991 Peugeot Pilote motorhome. Over four years, they have covered approximately 60,000 kilometers across 12 countries, including Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. They purchased and customized the motorhome after moving to Portugal, opting for a life without a fixed home.

The Ribatejo region in Portugal is expanding its network of service areas for motorhomes to attract off-season tourism. The goal is to establish 28 fully-equipped areas with water, electricity, and waste disposal by the end of 2025. Investments in new areas, such as in Chamusca, have exceeded 100,000 euros.

Portuguese publication SAPO has compiled a list of six European destinations for summer motorhome trips. The selection includes natural parks and coastlines in Portugal, Spain, and France, such as Peneda-Gerês National Park, Costa Vicentina, Sierra de Gredos, Picos de Europa, the Pyrenees, and Provence. Recommended campsites for overnight stays are provided for each location.
