Importing Japanese camper to the Netherlands leads to high costs

The Netherlands is amending the tax definition of a motorhome. From February 4, 2026, the criterion for classifying a vehicle as a motorhome will change from 'one quarter' to 'half' of the useful space. The amendment is retroactive to January 1, 2026.

Compact camper vans based on MPVs are gaining popularity in the Netherlands due to their versatility. Sales of new campers in 2025 increased by 16% compared to the previous year, and the total number of registered caravans and campers reached a record 634,660 units. These vehicles can be driven with a standard category B license, but it is crucial to monitor their actual weight, which often exceeds factory specifications.

Rita Popken-Reuvekamp from Sleen passed her C1 license exam to drive a motorhome. She plans to travel with her husband in retirement, taking their motorcycles and dog along. The instructor points out that many owners overload smaller campers, invalidating their standard car license for driving them.

A 1983 Volkswagen LT 28 motorhome is listed for sale at €6,950. The vehicle is exempt from road tax due to its 40-year age and comes with a valid two-year MOT certificate. It has over 56,000 km on the odometer and a 75 hp engine. The seller states the interior needs some work.

Small campsites are becoming increasingly popular among holidaymakers. However, their limited space and the dense parking of motorhomes, creating a 'white wall' effect, are causing irritation for some campers.

Caravancentrum Zwaagwesteinde is offering a used 2009 Dethleffs Camper 450 DB motorhome. The vehicle features a motor mover, sleeps four, and includes a bathroom with shower and a kitchen. Its maximum authorized mass is 1350 kg with an unladen weight of 1030 kg.
