Japan expands one-way motorhome rental network for foreign tourists

Japanese Instagrammer YURIE has customized a Nissan Vanette camper van for travel. She purchased a used vehicle in early summer last year and modified it to reflect her personal style, inspired by 1970s culture. The interior was converted into a sleeping area with wood paneling and vintage decor.

Japanese company Direct Cars has developed the Dune Rover, a camper van based on the Daihatsu Hijet mini-truck. The interior features two sleeping areas, a mini-kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave, and an autonomous power system with a lithium battery. The fully equipped version is priced at approximately $45,800.

Toyota has introduced a ready-made camper van designed for short trips. The vehicle is equipped with a bed, a portable shower, and a compact kitchen. This configuration allows for recreational use without requiring further modifications.

YURT's VANLIFE ROOMKIT for the Toyota Sienta is now available through the Toyota Mobility Kushiro dealer network starting February 13, 2026. This marks the first exhibition and sale of the kit on the island of Hokkaido. The kit converts the minivan into a living space for two people.

The LAC EV Camper, an electric motorhome based on the Kia PV5 van, debuted at the Japan Camping Car Show 2026. It features a 71.2 kWh battery, enabling unlimited use of air conditioning and appliances. With dimensions similar to a Toyota Hiace, the Long Range version offers approximately 530 km of range.

From March 20 to May 6, an overnight experience using stationary motorhomes will be held at the Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park. Guests can enjoy evening views of the Osaka plain and morning sunrises over Nara from the mountaintop. The price starts at 38,000 yen on weekdays, with reservations opening on February 19.
