Podcast discusses declining media presence of travel trailers

The cost of motorhome and caravan travel has increased significantly in 2026, primarily due to fuel and campsite prices. Diesel is the largest single expense, while overnight prices at popular coastal sites have risen by almost 28% since 2020, averaging around 40 euros per night. This has shifted traveler demand to nearby destinations and cooled the market for new vehicle sales.

Camping tourism in Germany continues to grow while other segments stagnate. In 2025, campsites recorded 44.7 million overnight stays, a 4.2% increase from 2024, marking the fourth consecutive record year. The strongest growth was seen in winter months, particularly December (+18.5%).

The municipality of Schliersee has approved a concept to regulate motorhome tourism. Six parking sites with varying service levels are planned, costing between 12 and 25 euros per 24 hours. Investments range from 1,000 to 40,000 euros per site, with an expected payback period of five years.

The city of Oschersleben is considering introducing fees for parking on the motorhome site at Wiesenpark, which is currently free. A city council member criticized the current practice as a loss of potential revenue for the city. The administration is expected to review the issue.
